My name is Karina Garcia I am a native of the Dominican Republic, moved to Harlem in the early 2000s. I've always been surrounded by food and grew up in the kitchen. When I moved to the USA, I started my career in the kitchen when more often than not, I was the youngest and the only female staff in the kitchen. I worked all the positions from dishwasher to captain at various restaurants in New York City ranging from restaurants like Ristorante Morini( where I meet my husband and business partner) in the Upper East Side, to Eleven Madison Park in Chelsea. My fascination for Mexican food led me to take many trips to Mexican on a by month basis and currently, my new business venture where I am cooking from home. My husband, Eduardo, also known as Lalo, is a musician and an avid food lover who's love for Mexican food goes beyond his heritage. He was born and raised in different states and cities from Mexico, where the food varies from state to state. His family is heavily involved in the beverage industry in Huejotzingo, Puebla. He has worked not only at a 2 star New York Times restaurant but also at Cosme, which is currently the best restaurant in the USA in the St. Pellegrino's list. Since we got together over two years ago, it has been our goal to open up a small intimate restaurant to serve real authentic Mexican food. During this tragic pandemic, we made a choice to share with the public the many family recipes that we replicate here at home. Recipes are ranging from well-known dishes like "Carne Asada" to the more regional ones like "Birria." When brainstorming for the name of our ventured, we consulted with my mother. She told me that my grandfather's name was Consuelo, which translates to "Solace." Solace happens to be Lalo's late grandmother's name and a name we had considered. After the conversation with my mother, we knew then it was all meant to be. The concept of our venture is to focus on highlighting the many varieties of tacos in Mexicos while engaging with our guests in a very private and intimate setting that will make anyone feel cozy and at home.

Trying to find the right words to post a review of my experience at Cocina Consuelo is almost impossible, everything is delicious and Karina and Lalo are 2 spectacular hosts. My friends and I shared the Sardines with Salsa Macha, beautiful mix of savory and spice . We also had the Tuétano/ Bone Marrow, perfectly cooked with plenty meat to enjoy in tacos. I had 1 Chipotle Cheese taco, and Tuna Jalapeño taco, can't find anything like this in NYC, The main dish was a Chile en Nogada, anything good I write about this dish would be a understatement. Stuffed and everything couldn't leave without trying the desserts, 3 leches cake and Chocoflan are a must even if you don't have a sweet tooth.

New York is very much alive and, like in the old good times, you have to take the A train to Harlem, Hamilton Height, Sugar Hill, and meet Karina, the Chef, and Lalo the classical guitar player. The young and charming couple has created Cocina Consuelo to face the economic challenges of the Covid19 era. The result is what one was dreaming of: the warmth of conviviality together with the most delicious Mexican food. Being vegetarian I was treated with " Tinga Tacos " made of hibiscus, onion and chipotle pepper, followed by " Vegan Fajitas " made of sorrel, peppers, mushroom, chipotle pepper stuffed with handmade cheese. I finished this feast with a " Tres lèche cake with coconuts flakes. I had to ask Karina to write me down those details to put words to all the flavors flowing through my palate. It has been a Sunday experience I look forward to repeat, repeat and repeat! Trust me. I won't tell you about Consuelo, it is too much a personal and lovely story only Karina and Lalo can tell... giving you just a hint: la madeleine de Proust....

Absolutely THE BEST tacos in NYC, PERIOD!!! The vegan tacos are incredibly delicious and with the most amazing concept. You can tell they use high quality ingredients and cook with love!!
